It's been an amazing couple of days here in Avignon. I went to Arles on Wednesday as I had planned and it was really fun. Arles has so much personality and while it's small there is still so much to do. There are some great Roman ruins and an arena and it is the former home of Vincent Vangogh. There are Vangogh sights everywhere in town since he painted nearly everything while he was there. I did notice in Avignon that there were many Americans. I met two really nice couples that were traveling together, one from Florida and one from Canada. We talked for a while and they were really fun people. Arles was definitely a great stop and I would love to return someday.
Here's where the day gets crazy: I'm at the station in Arles waiting for my return train and a woman walks up to me asking for help and she's American. She couldn't buy a ticket because it was late in the day and nobody was working at the station. Anyway, we got to talking and it turned out she is from Florida and we stayed at the same hostel in Paris at the same time and we were now staying in Avignon at the same hostel. Pretty crazy. So were walking back and we see these student hanging out in one of the main squares and there is basically an entire acoustic band with them. One of the girls motioned for us to join- so we did. It ended up being a band from Canada that was traveling Europe and earning money by playing. They were with several local art students as well. We spent hours on the steps drinking and talking and dealing with the occasional bum. At about 1am we returned to one of the French girls apartments and partied over there. It turned out to be a really memorable night.
Yesterday it rained all day so I hung out with about 50 Germans that are staying here on a school trip. However, I never went on a school trip where everyone brings at least a case of beer- pretty sweet trip. It was another fun night but now I'm headed to Nice where it hopefully won't be raining.
Still no pictures but my hostel in Nice should have better internet. It's the #1 rated hostel in France after all.
